Caption
Revolution. The Honourable Gabriel Riqueti, Count of Mirabeau. Born in Le Bignon, today known as Le Bignon-Mirabeau, Loiret, 1749 Paris 1791. French politician. After a troubled childhood, he was elected, although already holding a title as a noble, to be a representative of the Third Estate of Aix-en-Provence in 1789. As a prestigious public speaker, it was he who made the famous remark to the marquis of Dreux-Brézé : "Go and tell the King that we are here by the will of the people and we will not be moved aside from by the might of the bayonet" (23 June 1789). In support of a Constitutional Monarchy, he worked in secret for the King (May 1790), to whom he offered advice, despite the King's disregard of it. 19th Century engraving.
