View of Héligoland harbour. The Heligoland archipelago (Helgoland in german) is located south-west of the North sea. It was territory belonging to Denmark, Great Britain and Germany successively, the island having been ceeded to Germany by Great Britain in 1890 as a stipulation in the treaty of Heligoland-Zanzibar. Made up of several small islands, each one keeping within 1 km2 in area, it is populated with around 1,650 inhabitants. It forms part of the territory belonging to Schleswig-Holstein.
