Chartres. The Chartres Cathedral. North side. This bay (on the right) has been dedicated to depicting figures of the Old Testament. From left to right: Balaam, accompanied by his donkey, the Queen of Saba, whose head is adorned by a tiara, (and at whose feet is depicted an african). Salomon, representing Jesus Christ, is closer to the Queen of Saba, who represents the Church. At her feet the "mad" Marcoulf, in a posture similar to that of the gargoyles.
