The Arena of Nîmes is a Roman amphitheatre, located in the french town of Nîmes in le Gard. The structure was built at the end of the 1st Century in order to provide entertainment for the population of Nîmes and the surrounding areas. During the "Great Invasions", Nîmes became a fortified town, with the "castrum arenae" where the people took refuge; later becoming a town notable for its' roads and boutiques during the period lasting from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century. In the 19th Century, the amphitheatre was turned into a bullfighting ring in 1863. 19th Century engraving.
