Roncevaux
Caption
Roncevaux (Roncesvalles in spanish and Orreaga in basque), is a commune in the north of Spain located in Comarca, and in the Foral community of Navarra. This modest village in the Pyrenee, including a beautiful church and a museum, has a dual reputation. According to legend, it was here that Roland, in the rear-guard of Charlemagne's army, was ambushed by the Vascons on the 15th August 778. He blew his horn, to late for the King to have been able to send assistance. The legendary stronghold of Roland is found in the central Pyrenees, below the circle of Gavarnie and Pas de Roland in the commune of Itxassou in the Atlantic-Pyrenees, along the Nive. A granite rock, decorated with bas-reliefs of bronze, depicts the memory of the events that inspired the most famous epics. 19th Century engraving.
