The battle of Poitiers, referred to also as the "battle of Tours", and the "road of the martyrs", by arabian historians, refers to a victory won by Charles Martel, mayor of the royal frankish palace, over the muslims commanded by Abd el Rahman. This important victory had an immediate effect, as much for the christians as for the muslims; the victory was symbolic both of the fight in Europe for the christians against the muslim invasion. 19th Century engraving.
