Title
Seal of Pepin III.
Caption
Seal of Pepin III, better known under the name "Pepin the Short", his surname owing to his small stature. Born around 715 in Jupille (near to Liège in Belgium, the location of a good number of priviledged monarchs during the Merovingian dynasty and the first Carolingians), he died on the 24th September 768 in Saint-Denis (in the north of Paris). Younger son of Charles Matel and Rotrude de Trèves, he was: mayor of the Palace of Neustria (741-751), with Bourgogne and Provence; mayor of the Palace of Austrasia (747-751); King of the Franks (751-768); father of Emperor Charlemagne (around 742-814). 19th Century engraving.
