Title
Brèche de Roland.
Caption
Brèche de Roland. Roncevaux (Roncesvalles in spanish and Orreaga in basque), is a commune in the north of Spain situated in Comarca in the community of Navarra. The modest town in the Pyrenees, including a beautiful church and a museum, has a dual reputation. According to legend, it was there that Roland, leading the rear-guard of Charlemagne's army was ambushed by the Vascons on the 15th August 778. He blew his horn, too late for the King to be able to provide assistance. The legendary Brèche de Roland is located in the central Pyrenees, below the circle of Gavarnie and le Pas de Roland in the commune of Itxassou in the Atlantic Pyrenees, on the Nive. 19th Century engraving.
