Lothair (941, Laon - 2 March 986, Laon), was the Frankish King (954-986), son of Louis IV of France and of Gerberga of Saxony. He immediately succeeded his father to the throne and was crowned King on the 12th November 954 at the Saint-Remi abbey in Reims by the Archbishop Artaud. Having refused to share the throne with his brother Charles, his brother his instead given providence over the duchy of Basse-Lotharingie in June 977, by his cousin, Emperor Othon II of Germania. As a result of a supposed mistress, suspected to be the sister of the Count Robert, mayor of the Palace of his brother Charles of Lorraine, Lothair is the father of two illegitimate children: Arnoul or Arnould (before 967-1021), archbishop of Reims, and Richard, (died after 991). 19th Century engraving.
