Title
Pierre d'Archères.
Caption
Born in the middle of the 11th Century, Pierre d'Archères, "the Hermit", probably originally from Amiens, had probably already addressed what the Holy Land considered to be "Holy" when Pope Urban II launched his appeal for the Crusades on the 27th November 1095 during the council of Clermont. The aim of the Pope was for the Turks, who had conquered Jerusalem during the Muslim Conquests in 1073, to forbid access to the Holy Lands to the Christians on a pilgrimage. Peter the Hermit was one of the popular preachers, one of those that the historian Jacques Heers referred to as one of God's "madmen". These preachers, associated with the Pope's call to pilgrimage, led to the high attendance of auditoriums where they preached the reform of morals to the public. 19th Century engraving.
