The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as the Church of the Resurrection (Naos tis Anastaseos; in georgian: Agdgomis Tadzari; in armenian: Surp Harutyun) by the Christians of the Orient, is a Christian church situated outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. This place is considered to be the Holiest of Holy places for Christians particularly who visit. The site consists of a sanctuary built around the site of Christ's crucifixion (Golgotha), as well as the site where he was buried (The "sepulchre" or the "grave" of Jesus) and where he resurrected (Anastasis, in greek "Resurrection"). The Church has become an important place of pilgrimage dating back to the 4th Century. Today it is the place where the site of the head of the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Catholic Archpriest of the Basilica and Holy Sepulchre. 19th Century engraving.
