Equestrian statue of William the Conqueror in Falaise. William the Conqueror (Falaise, around 1027 - Rouen, 9th September 1087) is also known under the names of William the Bastard, William II of Normandy, and finally, William Ist of England. He is the illegitimate son of Robert the Magnificent at Arlette (or "Herleva"). Duke of Normandy from the age of 8 years old, he succeeded in 1066 in becoming the King of England. This conquest led to him becoming one of the most powerful monarchs in Western Europe. 19th Century engraving.
