William the Conqueror. The Battle of Hastings (sometimes called the Battle of Senlac) is a battle which was fought on the 14th October 1066, 8 kilometres to the north of Hastings, in the county of East Sussex, south of England, which saw the Anglo-Saxon King of England go to battle with Harold Godwinson. The Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror, began his campaign of England with this battle. 19th Century engraving.
