Caption
Peter the Hermit preaching during the Crusades. Born during the middle of the 11th Century, Peter Archer, known as "the Hermit", probably originally from Amiens, had already travelled across what the Christian world considered to be the Holy Land when Pope Urban II launched his appeal to the Crusades on the 27th November 1095 at the Council of Clermont. The Pope's aim was to liberate the Holy Land for the Christian pilgrims which had previously, been conquered by the Turks over the Arabs in 1073. Peter the Hermit was one of the main preachers in favour of the Crusades, referred to by the historian Jacques Heers as one of the "God's madmen". These men were described as giving speeched to large audiences to which they preached the reform of the mores on behalf of the Pope's appeal. 19th Century engraving.
