Brennos (in latin: Brennus originating from the Gallic name of Brenn, meaning "war leader"), was a Gallic leader during th 4th Century B.C. He commanded his army in Italy, notably successfully in Rome, in 390 B.C. The story of the "oies du Capitole" (the "geese of the Capitole") relates to this siege, and is where Brennus is said to have pronounced his famous exclamation "Vae Victis!" ("Woe to the vanquished ones!" in latin), the expression becoming well-known as a result of the following: Tite-Live was later known to have spoken the phrase, "Gloria Victis" (V, 48, 9). 19th Century engraving.
