Vercingetorix laying down his weapons before Caesar. Vercingetorix (born around 80 B.C. in Auvergne, died in 46 B.C. in Rome) was the son of the gallic leader of the Arvernes tribe, Celtillos. He led the majority of the galic people and leaders in pushing back the Roman invasion under the command of Julius Caesar at the end of the Gallic war (58 B.C. to 51 B.C.). Defeated in Alesia in 52 B.C., he was imprisoned, then executed in Rome after the triumph of the Roman armies. 19th Century engraving.
