Léon Gambetta (1838-1882). French lawyer and politician. Opposed to the imperial regime, he fought for complete freedom of the press, separation of Church and State, and the introduction of income taxes. A Republican who did not support the Franco-Prussian War, he repudiated the amnesty of the Communards. He served as deputy, President of the Chamber of Deputies, President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
