Godfrey of Bouillon (1058-1100) was the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem: he refused the title of King that had been proposed to him at the time of the city's capture in 1099 and was known instead as the Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre. Alexis I of Comnène (1048-1118) became Byzantine Emperor in 1081.
