General Hirschauer of the French Army. As a Mosellois, he symbolized the Eastern part of the nation, torn between France and Germany. He was responsible for setting up the defense for the fortified camp of Paris, on the eve of the Battle of the Marne. He proved himself at Verdun (1916) and at the Chemin des Dames (1917).
