Otto von Guericke (1602-1686). German scientist, inventor and politician. His principle scientific contribution concerned vacuum physics. He invented the air pump and created the very first artificial vacuum, called the Magdeburg hemispheres, applied the barometer to weather forecasting, and invented the first electrostatic generator.
