Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870). French writer, historian and archaeologist. One of the first to translate numerous books from Russian to French. Inspector General of historical monuments from 1834 to 1860. Elected to the French Academy in 1844. He was emprisoned and paid a fine for his support of Count Libri, robber of rare books.
