Saint-Jean d'Acre was taken from the Arabs by the Crusaders in 1104. In 1187, Saladin regained it for the Ottomans before Richard Lion-Heart reconquered it for the Christians in 1191. Until 1291, the city, where the Knights Hospitalers were located, was a great intellectual center. However, Acre fell to the hands of the Mamluks, thus marking the end of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Western presence on Holy Ground.
