Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck (1815-1898) unified Germany, and became its first Chancellor (1871 – 1890). A conservative, aristocratic and royalist politician, Bismarck instituted obligatory retirement and health and accident insurance for workers in order to calm the working class, thus dissuading them from joining the socialist movement.
