Baron James de Rothschild, President of the Compagnie des Chemins de fer du Nord, entrusted the construction of a new station to the architect Jacques-Ignace Hittorff, who chose to combine ashlar facades with an iron and cast iron framework. He gave the building a "U" shape, the usual plan for a terminus station. The new station was opened in 1864.
