The Order of the Temple is a military and religious order, founded by Hugues de Payns, at the Council of Troyes, January 13, 1129.
Previously called the militia of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, the Order worked during the 12th and 13th centuries to accompany and protect pilgrims to Jerusalem in the context of the Holy Wars and the Crusades.
