General Joubert at the Battle of Rivoli, 14th January 1797
In Italy, the French general Napoleon Bonaparte won many victories and laid siege to the city of Mantoue. The Austrians, also present in the country, decided to attack the French soldiers. The two armies met not far from the town of Rivoli, in the north of Italy. On 12 January, the first French forces retreated against the Austrians of General Alvinczy. Fortunately, on 14 January, Bonaparte and then General Masséna arrived with reinforcements and defeated the Austrian army.
