"The Devil upon Two Sticks", a novel by Alain-René Lesage, published in 1707.
Augustus Leopold Egg (1816-1863), an English painter, illustrates the story of Patricio, seated on the left, who has spent the day chasing two women in the city in the hope of seducing one of them, Luisita (standing). After an expensive meal, the young women leave their admirer behind and he returns home to his wife, ashamed of having been fooled by these girls.
