Title
Ball of the ifs - Versailes - 19th century
Caption
Masked ball given by King Louis XV in the Hall of Mirrors of the Château de Versailles, 25-26 February 1745, on the occasion of the marriage of Louis, Dauphin of France, to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain, daughter of Philip V, his cousin.
Two days after the Dauphin's religious wedding (23 February 1745), the festivities came to an end with the " Ball of the Ifs ", which has remained famous because King Louis XV mingled incognito with the crowd, disguised as a yew tree (group on the right). It was at this ball that Louis XV, protected by his costume, showed his interest in Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, wife of Le Normant d'Étiolles, the future Marquise de Pompadour, whom he had met a short time earlier during a hunt in the Sénart forest.
Colour chromolithograph, 19th century. After Charles-Nicolas Cochin the younger (1715-1790).
