Title

Bas-relief symbolising the Napoleonic Code

Caption

The Napoleonic Code: bas-relief in the crypt of Napoleon's tomb in the church of Les Invalides in Paris.

At the centre, Napoleon I points in a double movement, the old and confused legislation (symbolized by the old man bent left) has ceased to exist, and that a single law now governs France (the young man on the right). The furthest two figures represent the provinces: the left tears customary law and the right oath Code Napoleon.
