Surrounded in the basin, French troops had resisted General Giap's North Vietnamese offensive for fifty-seven days. At the beginning of April, there were only 6,300 able-bodied fighters left among the colonial troops. In less than two months, the battle cost the lives of more than 3,000 French soldiers and around 20,000 Vietnamese.
