Vietnam. Indochina. Dien Bien Phu. Former Viet Minh soldier, with his typical latanier leaf helmet, visiting General de Castrie's headquarters with members of his family, fell 50 years earlier, on May 7, 1954. Launched on March 13, the attack on the camp was entrenched French had mobilized divisions 304, 320, 308, 312, 315, 316 and 325 of the battle corps Viet Minh. Surrounded in the basin, French troops had resisted General Giap's North Vietnamese offensive for fifty-seven days. At the beginning of April, there were only 6,300 able-bodied fighters left among the colonial troops. In less than two months, the battle cost the lives of more than 3,000 French soldiers and around 20,000 Vietnamese.
