Title
VIETNAM - 60EME ANNIVERSAIRE BATAILLE DE DIEN BIEN PHU
Caption
Vietnam. Indochina. Dien Bien Phu. The cemetery of the Viet-Minh dead on the French support point Huguette, formerly commanded by Captain Alain Bizard. Transformed into a historic memorial site of the War of Independence by the Vietnamese authorities, the place has remained in this state for 60 years. Launched on March 13, the attack on the French entrenched camp mobilized divisions 304, 320, 308, 312, 315, 316 and 325 of the Viet-Minh battle corps. Surrounded in the basin, the French troops resisted General Giap's North Vietnamese offensive for fifty-seven days. At the beginning of April, there were only 6,300 able-bodied fighters left among the colonial troops. In less than two months, the battle cost the lives of more than 3,000 French soldiers and around 20,000 Vietnamese.
