On 1st December 1783 more than four hundred thousand people flocked to the Tuileries. At forty minutes past one, a gunshot rang out to announce the balloon's departure. Charles the physicist and the youngest of the Robert brothers took their place in the gondola in the shape of a chariot. The balloon rose majestically above the applauding crowd.
The plate's design is called "at the jardin des Tuileries." This kind of design sometimes includes one of the following inscriptions: "a dieu" (farewell), "bon voyage" (have a nice trip), "à l’immortalité" (to immortality) and "la folie du siècle" (the mad century).
