On 21st November 1783, at the Château de la Muette, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the marquis d'Arlandes rose above the trees in the park. It was an enthralling sight as the ballonists waved their handkerchiefs and their hats in front of a captivated crowd. Immense joy spread throughout the parc de la Muette.
The balloon headed towards the Seine, past Benjamin Franklin's hotel in Passy and Princesse de Lamballe's residence down the Chaillot hillside. The Parisians were in awe of the rare sight of the blue and gold balloon gliding across the sky. The balloon continued its journey over the Ecole Militaire, hôtel des Invalides and finally the French Institute.
