Each side of the case has a small design documenting the aerostatic experiments of 19th September and 21st November 1783.
On 19th September 1783, The craft named « Le Réveillon » left faubourg Saint-Antoine at dawn in a royal horse drawn storage car. It arrived in Versailles around 10 o'clock. The experiment began at twelve fifty-six and the balloon was inflated within seven minutes. A wicker cage containing a duck, a rooster and a lamb was attached to the base of the balloon. The blue and gold hot-air balloon rose majestically in the direction of the chapel in order to reach an altitude of above five hundred metres.
On 21st November 1783, at the Château de la Muette in front of 200 spectators, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the marquis d'Arlandes took off on their first aerial voyage. It was an enthralling sight filled with many emotions as the balloon and its two passengers rose above the trees in the park. The ballonists waved their handkerchiefs and their hats in front of a captivated crowd and an immense joy spread throughout the parc de la Muette.
