Charles the physicist and the Robert brothers invented the hydrogen balloon in 1783. The first "free flying" balloon took off from the Champs de Mars on 27th August 1783. On 1st December 1783 at the Tuileries, Charles and the youngest of the Robert brothers rose up into the air on board a charlière. They landed in Nesle la Vallée.
