The only vestige of ancient Christianity in Antioch, the Grotto of Saint Peter is said to have welcomed the first Christian community, founded in 47AD by Peter, Paul and Barnabas. The faithful gathered there in secret, unbeknownst to the Roman authorities, and the tunnel (pictured on the right of the photo) at the end of the cave served as an escape route in times of danger.
