Cixi, also called Hsiao-ch'in or Hsien Huang-hou, known as Empress Dowager (1835-1908).
She maintained an iron grip over the Manchu Imperial house (Ch'ing dynasty), becoming one of the most powerful women in the history of China. This picture was taken by a wife of European diplomats, during one of the very few meetings the Empress had with western women.
