The ruins of Taxila, one of the most important archaeological sites in South Asia, lie 35 km north-west of Rawalpindi, in Pakistan. Taxila reached its zenith between the 1st and 5th centuries AD when Buddhist monuments were erected throughout the Indus Valley.
