Text in verso : "Bagueti-watercolour, project of a monument dedicated to a glory for the republianc armies.'
It is the three-days crossing of the Alpes which is mentionned here, in may 1800 from 16 to 18, during the second Italian campaign, when Marengo became victorious in june the 14th of 1800.
Climbing slowly and walking in the mountain, the French Revolution armies by-pass the rock and reach the summit. On a rocky esplanade, they discovered an octastyle oversized temple with a dome and with an historical frieze under a projecting cornice. General staff is at the bottom of the temple and the armies are behind
At the bottom, a lapis lazuli-like cartouche, with palmettes and gilded moldings contains the quote : "To the Italian army's General-in-chief, Bagetti, 1st plûviose of the year IX".
