Ruhlmann secretary

Caption

Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann (1879-1933)
Slant-front secretary known as the 'Van Beuningen' model, veneered on all sides with amber amboyna burl. The large drop-front, hinged on invisible hinges, reveals a refined interior, entirely lined with green Moroccan leather, embossed with gold-enhanced fillets. On either side of the small semi-circular deflector lamp, there is a cleverly arranged set of storage compartments. Flanking the slim central drawer, two taller drawers slide within the rounded cutout of the apron. Their interiors are treated. The secretary rests on tall corner legs, with a rounded prismatic section, tapering to high 'duck bill' feet. The circular keyhole with pivoting cover and the roller-grip handles on double-fluted plates are original features. Made of oak stained reddish-brown, gilded bronze (106.5x116.3x50.5cm).
