MEXICO, Chiapas, Tepachula, "October 2005, two weeks after the devastation of Hurricane Stan and most of Chiapas and the Pacific side of Guatemala are still 'incommunicado' and desperately in shock. As locals begin to re-piece their shattered lives, I start to hear vivid accounts and see the aftermath of Stan's incredible destruction that was unfortunately less than adequately covered by the majority of media outlets. After seeing the impact of the previous Hurricane Katrina in the US, the accounts of Stan's destruction in Chiapas and Guatemala, were yet another reminder, of the inequitable severity of destruction these natural disasters have on poor and marginalized sectors of an affected population. The destruction is a couple of miles outside the centre of town and shows crumpled buildings, twisted staircases, broken pipes and cables, heaps of rubble and debri. The focus of the photo is a destroyed hotel, where one can just about make out the reception sign amongst the destruction. In the background, there is a clear blue sky and life seems to be carrying on as normal with the abandoned shells of building roasting in the midday sun. Truly shows the damage natural disasters can cause, broken homes, shattered lives. "
