Edward the Martyr arriving at Corfe, Dorset, 978 (1864). King Edward (c963-978) received by his stepmother Elfrida (945-1000) before being murdered at Corfe castle, Dorset on 18 March 978. He was stabbed to death in cold blood by the retainers of his younger brother Ethelred. From a private collection.
