Like most small South African towns Fouriesburg was once a study in inequality. A wealthy patron is parked outside the local bank while across the valley in Mashaeng there is obvious poverty. The inequalities, however, are not nearly as marked now as poverty has become the condition of the whole town. Rural farming communities are under pressure in South Africa with the uncertainties in the agricultural sector compounded by rapid urbanisation.
