A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED: Boundaries in Dr J. V. Larsen\\'s Career\n\nMy father always walked the road less travelled. And my mother walked it with him. She was us ever present support through at least two nervous breakdowns as he sought to hold a health system together that ignorant political decisions eventually destroyed. All he had worked for for so many years was undone in two weeks. In the wake of those decisions maternity deaths soured. Years later the state has come around and is now attempting to reinstate the systems my father and other colleagues had put in place.\nAlthough officially retired my father continues to serve, this time in a new sphere of medicine. The town of Howick, KwaZulu Natal, where he retired to has an AIDS Clinic which he was asked to assist at. Within a few months he was heading up the Clinic as the doctor in charge was forced to retire.\n\nPhoto: David Larsen/africanpictures.net
