Chope musicians playing timbila music
Légende
near Inharrime, Inhambane Province, Mozambique 06/98
\nTraditionally timbila is played in the open air in sandy clearings beneath the deep shade of tropical trees. Like wind instruments dependent on air resonance timbila go out of tune if played in the hot sun as the air in the resonating gourds expands and ceases to be in tune with its wooden note. Timbila then are always stored in the deep shade which may account for the fact that traditionally Chope people lived in the forests, an observation made by Catholic missionary Father Andre Fernandes in 1560
