Young Khumalo is the son of Temba Khumalo a one time convict who became a born again Christian in prison and was assisted through the work of Project Gateway. Project Gateway is a church based empowerment initiative that was started on the back of the Seven Days War between Inkatha and the ANC in the Edendale Valley in March 1990. Initially a welfare organisation it has evolved to include entrepreneurial development and a school as well as welfare projects such as a HIV/AIDS community car project, a haven for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, a shelter for abused women, and a night shelter for homeless people. Various churches in the city of Pietermaritzburg take ownership of various projects.
