Jacques Louis DAVID (1748-1825). French painter. 'Leonidas at Thermopylae' (1814). Leonidas (d.c.480 BC) king of Sparta from 491 BC. Held pass at Thermopylae for 3 days with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians against Persians. All found dead. Louvre.
