Known now by the latinized form of Jan Hewel or Hewelcke, he spent as much time as he could spare from his brewing business observing from the roof of his house. Portrait from his "Machina Coelestis" (Danzig or Gdansk, 1673) in which he published details of his observatory, instruments and method of working. Engraving.
