In 1887 some of these women travelled to London to lobby the Home Secretary to resist the proposed clause in the Mines Regulation Bill which would prevent them doing this traditional work which was, by many, thought unsuitable for women. From "The Illustrated London News" (London, 28 May 1887). Engraving. England. Mining. Coal. Female labour.
